Aerohive Networks has introduced an innovative new class of wireless infrastructure equipment called a Cooperative Control Access Point (CC-AP). A CC-AP combines an enterprise-class access point with a suite of cooperative control protocols and functions to provide all of the benefits of a controller-based wireless LAN solution, but without requiring a controller or an overlay network. Aerohive Networks implementation of a CC-AP is called a HiveAP.

This cooperative control functionality enables multiple HiveAPs to be organized into groups, or “hives,” that share control information between HiveAPs to enable functions like fast layer 2/layer 3 roaming, cooperative RF management, security and mesh networking. This capability enables a next generation wireless LAN architecture, called a cooperative control wireless LAN Architecture, that provides all of the benefits of a controller-based architecture, but is easier to deploy and expand, lower cost, more reliable, more scalable, more ubiquitously deployable, higher performing and more suitable for voice over wireless LAN than today’s controller-based architectures.

HiveAPs discover each other whether they are connected to each other over a wired network, or wirelessly. When neighbors are found with the same hive or mobility credentials, they can build secure connections to each other. Once the neighbor relationships have been established between HiveAPs, they use cooperative control protocols to provide seamless mobility, cooperative RF management, resiliency and best path forwarding.

The HiveAP 110 is ideal for deployments where a single radio 802.11a/b/g/n solution is sufficient, such as small retail environments, telecommuters, and micro branches. Single radio APs can also be effective in low-capacity environments where the benefits of a second radio are small because there are few clients vying for airtime. The HiveAP 110 can operate in either band – 2.4GHz or 5GHz – providing the opportunity to use the less congested 5GHz band if the clients are all 5GHz capable.

Innovative Industrial Design

The AP110 is designed to blend well into an office environment. Our low-distraction indicators appear as gently glowing colors rather than bright blinking lights, avoiding employees from being distracted while clearly providing status to IT personnel, or indicators can be disabled altogether.

The HiveAP 170 is an enterprise-grade, high performance (2×2) MIMO solution, designed for high bandwidth demand outdoor wireless environments. With extended temperature range and a watertight chassis the AP 170 can deployed in most every outdoor environment on earth. The HiveAP with four antennas and the ability to provide service concurrently on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands the HiveAP 170 provides both high speed mesh and support for 802.11n as well as legacy 802.11a, b, and g clients, through Aerohive’s industry unique and resilient controller-less architecture.

Software Features

HiveOS

All HiveAPs support the feature-rich HiveOS service architecture. HiveOS is an implementation of Aerohive’s Cooperative Control Architecture which enables multiple APs to organize into groups or “hives,” that share control information enabling functions such as fast layer-2/layer-3 roaming, cooperative RF management, security and mesh networking without requiring a dedicated system controller. The resulting feature-rich capability enables a next generation wireless LAN architecture, called a Cooperative Control Wireless LAN Architecture. This architecture provides the benefits of a controller-based implementation, yet has a lower deployment/ownership cost, is more reliable, more scalable, higher performing and more suitable for today’s proliferation of wireless applications than controller-based architectures.

Network Management Solutions

Aerohive’s HiveManager NMS is a central management solution for Aerohive HiveAPs. HiveManager supports simple policy creation, firmware upgrades, configuration updates, and centralized monitoring throughout the entire Aerohive deployment, whether building-wide, campus-wide, or global – all from a single console. Because the HiveManager is not actively involved in passing traffic or in making forwarding decisions, it eliminates the traffic bottlenecks and complexities of controller-based solutions, particularly in geographically distributed environments. As a result, control is distributed, while management is centralized. Essentially, the HiveManager solution delivers the benefits of both autonomous APs and controller-based solutions, without the drawbacks of either approach.

Aerohive’s HiveManager NMS can be delivered two ways:

  • HiveManager Online—a cloud-based management service from Aerohive
  • HiveManager VMware virtual appliance—an on-premise VM management solution

The Aerohive Networks Branch Router

The Aerohive BR100 packs “work anywhere” mobility, enterprise routing, and security into one compact device.

Administrators need only set up a single configuration for remote devices via the familiar HiveManager interface; when the BR100 branch router is plugged in, it discovers the HiveManager automatically, and configuration is pushed to it. The BR100 enables administrators to run a thousand remote office VPNs as easily as a single deployment.

In addition to 802.11n WiFi, the BR100 features up to 8 SSIDs and 16 VLANs shared across wired and wireless interfaces, which can be configured in a number of ways to handle any small office/teleworker requirements. One SSID can be dedicated for employee access using 802.1X, for example, while another is used for guest access where devices are using a pre-shared key. Four 10/100 LAN ports are also configurable to share a VLAN with a wireless SSID, as well as be protected by a Captive Web Portal.

The BR100 can be provisioned in several different ways, for maximum convenience and cost effectiveness. Organizations may choose to purchase the BR100 outright, and deploy/manage the devices as usual. Or the BR100 can be enabled via the innovative Branch on Demand. This subscription includes the BR100 and a subscription to Aerohive’s HiveManager Online, for the ultimate in flexibility.

Since most of the traffic generated at branch or remote locations is destined for the Internet, Aerohive’s patent-pending Cloud Proxy automatically diverts that traffic through a cloud-based web security service, vastly reducing bandwidth costs by eliminating the need to route branch, remote office or mobile-user traffic back to a central location for filtering.
