Deployment

One of most popular uses for Netmon Software and Appliance Editions is the ability to monitor network traffic activity in real time. In order for Netmon’s packet analyzers to work properly, it must receive a copy of the packets going across your network. This is accomplished at the minimum by:

Port mirroring (also known as port spanning) – Most enterprise switches support this feature. The steps to enable port monitoring vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so consult the product documentation for your switch to determine the necessary steps.

Using a hub (not recommended) – If, however, you are using a hub, no configuration is necessary: hubs send all traffic to each port automatically. Hubs however are not recommended as they reduce the connection speed to half duplex and may result in network degradation. Using Network Taps (recommended) – For best performance you should consider using a Network Tap (Test Access Port). Tap is a passive hardware device that provides a copy of traffic on any monitored link to your monitoring device. For more details check our dedicated tap website or contact us

**** Please read the white paper on the benefits of using network TAPs vs span ports

SNMP-capable equipment – Some features require snmp capability to be turned on.

Dedicated SQL and Exchange SNMP Agents – Our dedicated SQL and MS Exchange SNMP agents provide more specific performance metrics than the native SNMP modules included on your windows server. If you use either MS SQL or the MS Exchange servers we highly recommend these agents.

Netmon Software Edition

Netmon SE (Software Edition) is the perfect choice for smaller organizations who need a complete yet affordable solution for monitoring the health of their critical systems. Netmon Licensing

Licensing

Netmon is licensed on a per monitored device basis. This means that you can set up an unlimited number of specific monitoring goals, up to the maximum number of devices specified in your license.

Netmon can monitor traffic on one or more network segments through the use of a packet sniffer / protocol analyzer. Monitoring network traffic does not count toward your device limit – you’re free to monitor as much network activity as your hardware allows.

arrow Example 1: You have decided to begin monitoring your network but only have 5 servers and a minimal amount of printers and workstations. You may want to upgrade in the future as your company expands. Netmon-SE-25 is the right choice for you now due to the low price tag and smooth transition during a future upgrade.

arrow Example 2: Your network has 25 servers, 5 switches, 2 routers and 300 workstations. You want to monitor all your servers, switches and routers, as well as a handful of workstations. Netmon-SE-50 is the right choice for you.

arrow Example 3: Your network has 100 servers, 20 switches, 2 routers and 500 workstations. You want to monitor all your servers, switches and routers, as well as a handful of workstations. Netmon-SE-250 isthe right choice for you.

Product Upgrades

Netmon understands how critical a decision is when purchasing our product. In addition, we also understand that the right choice for you now may not be the most appropriate for your network environment in the future.

For that reason, we offer a no hassle upgrade for our clients. Any Software Edition Device License purchased from our website will be credited against a future upgrade for increased licenses.

Example: In order to monitor the traffic on your 5 servers, 2 routers, 10 workstations and 3 printers, you have decided to purchase Netmon-SE-25, knowing that in the next nine to twelve months your company is likely to be expanding due to a pending merger. Ten months down the road, the merger is complete and you have dramatically increased the amount of devices you will need to monitor. Rather than purchasing a brand new Netmon-SE-100 for your newly expanded company, Netmon will provide you with the 100 Device License for the cost minus what you originally paid for the Netmon-SE-25.

Please note that the upgrade will be subject to an administration charge. Products purchased through reseller channels have a different upgrade path.

Netmon Remote Edition

The Netmon Remote Probe system uses the Netflow protocol to send network traffic monitoring data back to your central Netmon system, allowing you to analyze network protocol distribution data, visualize live network traffic using the Visual Network Explorer component, and run traffic reports. You can use any TCP/IP network link between your Netmon Appliance and Netmon Probe to transmit your network traffic analysis data.

Netmon Exchange Agent

Track performance metrics on your Microsoft Exchange servers using the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

  • Do you know what is happening on your database server right now?
  • Do you get reports of intermittent performance problems?
  • Perhaps the server is responding slowly, but which database, query or service is consuming more resources than the others?
  • How is performance changing over time?

Now you can track the performance metrics on your Microsoft Exchange servers using the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). This software agent extends the native Windows SNMP agent and acquires data from standard Perfmon counters.
